To start, I approached the search like a decision problem - Reduce uncertainty and find a solid baseline to build on.
To get clarity, I first defined a set of requirements for the van:
- Keep it as small as possible while still allowing full standing height
- Diesel engine (Euro 6) for long-term flexibility in low-emission zones
- White exterior colour to reduce heat absorption and simplify temperature management
- All-season tires for reduced operational complexity
- Trailor hitch
- Mileage below 50.000 km to balance cost with expected reliability
- Budget up to 20.000€
After exploring different sizes, I settled on L2H2 as the sweet spot.
I also realized early that the base vehicle needs to be in very good condition - reliability matters more than saving a bit upfront.
I did a few test drives, including a Ford Transit, to get a better feel for size and handling. The Opel Movano stood out in terms of cost-performance, so I focused on validating that assumption.
By coincidence, a Movano was listed near my hometown. I initially went there just for a test drive. The van turned out to be in very good condition, met all my requirements and even included a parking heater already.
That was the moment the idea became real.
