Overview
In this project I document the full conversion of my Opel Movano transporter into a well-designed and durable mobile living system. The focus is on designing creative solutions within limited space to enable sustainable long-term usability. This includes thermal, electrical and water systems, all designed as part of an integrated setup. Along the way I share my ideas, decisions, progress and key learnings to make the entire process transparent.
Why
I don´t need everything to have it all. This project is about building a life with intention - focused on freedom, independence and what truly matters. This mindset was shaped through multiple road trips across the Baltic States, Scandinavia, the Alpine–Mediterranean region and South Africa. A deeper connection to nature is another key driver. Being in motion is essential to me because progress begins where stillness ends.
How
I combine structured planning with hands-on experimentation, apply best practices from others and continuously improve the system through real-world challenges, mistakes and iteration.
What
I bought an Opel Movano transporter and transform it into a self-sufficient van.
Architecture
Structural system
Insulation system
Thermal system
Ventilation system
Water system
Energy system
Storage system
Control and monitoring system
Learnings
Starting requires committing to the first real step - in this case, owning the van.
Hands-on work provides a different kind of satisfaction than purely digital work.
Having support makes a real difference when tasks become physically demanding.
Challenges
Balancing cost and reliability when choosing used components that must perform long-term.
Perfection is an illusion - Progress comes from iteration.
